A 19-year-old Israeli soldier intentionally used his body to protect his fellow soldiers from the explosion of a grenade during the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7, saving the lives of six comrades.

Matan Abergil was a resident of Hermesh in Samaria, the youngest of four children.

His parents were informed of his death on October 12, but the IDF initially did not share the circumstances.

Several hours later, one of Matan’s comrades in the 13th Golani Jordan Battalion, Daniel Varach shared the story of the soldier’s heroism.

During the fighting on Kibbutz Nir Am, Matan and six of his friends found themselves under attack by over 50 terrorists inside their armored vehicle.

Amidst the chaos, one of the terrorists threw a grenade inside the vehicle. Without hesitation, Matan jumped on the grenade, embracing it tightly as it exploded.

"I tried to do everything to protect the people of Israel," he said before dying.

With his sacrifice, the soldier saved the lives of his six teammates, sparing them from certain death.

Tributes to a hero

During his funeral, Matan's grieving mother paid tribute to her son. She spoke of his amazing qualities, his sense of humor, and his drive to go above and beyond.

“He always volunteered for every mission, and that is exactly what he did when the terrorists attacked,” she said. "Our son is a hero, you have become an angel. Watch over us from above.”

Matan's father, Eric, expressed his love for the soldiers who were with Matan in the APC, calling them his own children.

One of them, Amri, wept beside his surviving teammates at Matan's grave, expressing gratitude and acknowledging Matan's sacrifice.

"In our name and on behalf of all our friends, we thank you immensely. You saved us all and shielded us with your body,” he said. “You are a true hero. I will forever remember you and share your story wherever I go."
