The Southern District prosecutor on Thursday filed an indictment against Loren Ankri, the driver involved in a road accident that killed a family of eight, charging him with manslaughter, illegally overtaking another vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs. The head-on collision occurred two weeks ago on Route 90 near Ein Bokek. The Atar family from Psagot, including all six children, died after they were trapped inside their burning car. The indictment, filed by attorney Aviv Damari to the Beersheba District Court, states as follows: The defendant was driving his jeep on Route 90, heading south to the north, while under the influence of cannabis. His wife sat in the passenger seat and his younger daughter was in the back seat. At the same time, Yariv Atar was driving with his seven family members in their car, from north to south, in the opposite direction to the defendant. At a certain stage of the journey, the defendant decided to overtake the vehicle in front of him, which he did even though the route was not clear because Atar’s vehicle was traveling from the other direction, the indictment states. After Ankri moved into the opposite lane to overtake, he collided with the Atar family car. As a result of the accident, their vehicle went up in flames and the eight members of the Atar family died shortly thereafter.Ankri has 22 previous traffic convictions.
