Nearly 8,000 pupils injured in road accidents in 2012/13, report says

Twenty-five pupils were killed, 204 were severely injured and the rest were lightly wounded.

Some 7,930 school-age children were hurt in road accidents during the 2012-13 academic year, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported Monday.
According to the findings of the statistics agency, 63 percent of the pupils involved in accidents were passengers, 20% were pedestrians and 17% were drivers. Twenty-five were killed, 204 were severely injured and the rest were lightly injured.
The report also found that 57% of the injured were boys and 43% were girls, while 65%, or some 5,159 of the injured pupils studied in the Jewish education system and 35%, or some 2,771 pupils, studied in the Arab education system.
The report noted that, at 35%, the percentage of Arab pupils injured, was larger than their share of the general population of pupils, which is 27%.
In addition, the findings indicated that 75% of those injured were in first through tenth grades; 10% were in 11th grade; and 15% in 12th grade.
With regards to pedestrian accidents, the report found that 34% of those injured who studied in the ultra-orthodox school system were pedestrians – a much higher rate those injured in the state school system and the state-religious school system at 18% and 24%, respectively.
With regards to the timing of accidents, the report found that the majority of accidents occurred over the summer when kids are on vacation, with some 20% of children injured during the months of July and August. In contrast, November and December saw the least number of accidents with only 13% of pupils injured during those months.
Furthermore, the findings indicated that 67% of the injuries occurred during the day and 33% at night.
Some 70-75% of pupils in 1st-6th grades, 66% of pupils in 7th-10th grades and 58% of 11th and 12th graders were injured during the day, according to the report.
