Science ministry scholarships named after Rona Ramon
The program is designed to make scientific studies accessible to high-school students, especially those living in the periphery and from low socio-economic groups.

The Science and Technology Ministry’s annual mentoring scholarship will be named after Rona Ramon, the widow of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon and mother of late IAF pilot Asaf Ramon.Rona, who dedicated much of her life to advancing the study of science among Israel’s youth, succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Monday at age 54.Under one of the ministry’s flagship education projects, 1,500 students from across the country will receive a scholarship every year worth NIS 9,000 in return for mentoring school pupils in science and English studies. The program is designed to make scientific studies accessible to high-school students, especially those living in the periphery and from low socioeconomic groups.“The entire nation mourns the untimely death of Rona, who touched the heart of every Israeli,” said Science, Technology and Space Minister Ofir Akunis.“Rona dedicated her life to educational projects for young people, students and youth, out of a true mission to support Israel’s future. I decided to name the ministry’s mentoring scholarship in honor of the noble woman Rona Ramon to immortalize her educational legacy and social work.”The ministry worked closely with Rona during her lifetime to establish dozens of joint projects in the field of space, especially for children, teenagers and students, in memory of her late husband Ilan.These projects included the establishment of the Ramon Foundation, the Ramon SpaceLab, the Ilan Ramon Science Olympiad, Israel Space Week, space research scholarships for students abroad, the International Space Conference and the Ramon Award.Members of the public wishing to pay their last respects to Rona may visit the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation in Jaffa from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday.The public may also convey their condolences to the Ramon family at their shiva on Thursday at the Peres Center, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The family does not wish there to be media coverage of the funeral service, limiting it between 9 and 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
