41 troops, police lightly wounded in prison riots

Forty-one soldiers, police and members of the prison authority were lightly wounded when riots erupted at the Ofer prison early Tuesday morning in protest of the transfer of four Palestinian security prisoners to other jails. Close to 2 a.m. in the morning, inmates threw stones, rods, and set fire to a prison cell in an attempt to prevent the prisoners' transfer. Security forces were forced to use tear gas stun grenades and water cannons to quell the rioters. During the ordeal, four inmates were also wounded. Two of the inmates were sent to the hospital for treatment and calm was restored. The four security prisoners meant for transfer were transferred as planned.
