Six people were killed and two others seriously injured in the latest surge of violent road deaths overnight Thursday, in three separate car accidents throughout the country.
In Beersheba, a head-on collision between a private car and a commercial vehicle early Friday morning killed the car's four passengers and left two passengers from the other vehicle seriously hurt.
The four victims were identified as Alon Pearlman Spier, 27, from Haifa; Damien Hirschenoren, 32, from Tel Aviv; Michal Siton, 35, from Kiryat Tivon; and Miriam Gorilshuli, 25, from Rehovot. They were apparently on their way to the Sinai for a vacation.
The injured were taken to Beersheba's Soroka Hospital for medical treatment.
The head of the police's Southern District traffic department, Dep.-Cmdr. Henry Ben-Sha'anan, told Army Radio that the accident had occurred when one of the cars had apparently swerved into the oncoming lane.
Police were investigating suspicions that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
Ben-Sha'anan maintained that if the Beersheba road had a better infrastructure and a median strip between the two lanes, the morning's crash would have been far less deadly.
In two other accidents overnight, in Givat Shmuel and near Ramle, two other Israelis lost their lives.
