The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) petitioned the High Court of Justice on
Wednesday demanding that the police immediately stop setting up roadblocks to collect debts for the tax authority and the National Insurance Institute.
According to ACRI, the police set up these roadblocks mainly in east Jerusalem. ACRI attorney Tali Nir wrote that according to the law, police may only set up roadblocks in order to protect public safety.
"The use of these roadblocks to collect debts, as is routinely done by the police in east Jerusalem, has never been approved in legislation. The system is used almost exclusively in east Jerusalem at a frequency of once every week or two, Nir wrote.
