As the security cabinet convened on Saturday night to vote on a unilateral cease-fire, MKs from the Right expressed their disappointment with the expected agreement.
The Likud called on the government to continue with Operation Cast Lead until its goals were met, including an "effective closure of the corridor used to smuggle rockets into Gaza. Halting the operation under the current conditions means a second edition of the truce with Hamas. The Likud supports continuing the operation."
MK Yisrael Katz (Likud) said the government had failed in Gaza.
"The political echelon failed to achieve the goals of this war and wasted the achievements that were obtained by the IDF's soldiers and by the residents of the South," he said.
Hamas's power had not been eliminated and the return of Gilad Schalit had not been guaranteed, he said. "The Egyptian negative response turns the Israeli-American memorandum of understanding [on fighting arms smuggling] into an empty document," he said.
Israel Beiteinu called on the security cabinet to reject the proposal. "We call on the security cabinet not to approve a unilateral truce, since it would ruin all the IDF's achievements," the party said.
MK Arye Eldad (National Union) said the anti-smuggling memorandum Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni signed with the US would not prevent Hamas from rearming. "Next time the rockets will reach Tel Aviv and Dimona. Any agreement that doesn't give Israel complete control over the Philadelphi Corridor and doesn't bring Gilad Schalit back home cannot be considered a victory," Eldad said.
