Teachers at high schools and junior highs will suspend their strike beginning on Friday so as not to spoil Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies, but the protest action will resume on Tuesday.
The schools remained closed Thursday as teachers continued to strike in protest over the delay in a new salary agreement with the Finance Ministry.
The Finance and Education ministries announced that they would begin intensive talks with the Secondary School Teachers' Union, the organization that "represents the majority of educators in Israel."
Meanwhile, a strike by university students continued Thursday. They are demanding the dissolution of the Shochat Committee on Reforms in Higher Education and increased budgets for the schools.
Committee head Avraham Shochat reiterated that he had no plans to resign.
In an interview with Israel Radio, Shochat said no student would be unable to study due to financial difficulties. "Even if the committee decides to raise tuition, the students will receive monetary grants to help them pay," he said.
