Israel's security barrier won't determine any future border with the Palestinians, former Defense Ministry director-general Maj.-Gen. (res.) Amos Yaron said Sunday.
"The fence isn't supposed to affect negotiations. What will affect them are the government's positions," Yaron said at a symposium of the Council for Peace and Security held at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.
Yaron added that if the fence presented an obstacle to an agreement on borders with the Palestinians, it could be moved. "There have already been instances in which the fence was moved due to UN decisions. This is 'small change' [weighed against] establishing a clear border with the Palestinians."
The route of the fence had been based on the Green Line, Yaron said. "The security fence was the necessary answer. The moment Israel found itself under murderous terror attacks, [we] understood that only a fence could prevent hostile and criminal elements from entering."
