Two days after the summer solstice, days are getting shorter, but the summer heat is only increasing.
Gilgal in the Jordan Valley recorded Saturday's highest temperature - 45 degrees (113 Farenheit) in the shade. The heat reached 43 (109) in Eilat, 39 (102) at the Kinneret, 36 (97) in Jerusalem, and 31(88) in Haifa. Tel Aviv enjoyed a "balmy" 28 (82) degrees, but the comparative cool came at a price of 70 percent humidity.
Forecasters predicted climbing temperatures over the next few days, with the heat wave continuing until at least Thursday.
Due to the heat, IDF Ground Forces Commander Maj.-Gen. Benny Ganz has cancelled exercises scheduled for Sunday. Ganz is expected to meet tomorrow with other senior army officials to discuss the possibility of further cancellations.
Expecting a spike in electricity consumption as the temperatures climb, the Israel Electric Company has asked customers to reduce their usage and not operate equipment such as dishwashers, washing machines, and driers between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. Anyone using an air conditioner is advised to set it at 25 degrees.
The Health Ministry has advised the country's residents to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and avoid demanding physical activity.
