Thousands of people rallied Wednesday evening in Jerusalem to mark 20 years since Jonathan Pollard was convicted of spying for Israel in the United States and imprisoned.
The participants called upon senior officials in the US government to release Pollard from prison immediately.
Pollard's incarceration, which according to some estimates will continue another 10 years before he becomes eligible for parole, has been a political hot potato years. American Jews and Israelis hold periodic demonstrations in favor of his release, and Israeli leaders are routinely pressured to address the issue in diplomatic visits to the US.
Pro-Pollard activists recently plastered posters with his image on walls in Jerusalem, under which appeared a slogan reading, "If he were a terrorist, Sharon would make sure he was released."
