The Jewish Agency gave 1,250 flak jackets to local councils in the North to serve the councils' workers in time of emergency. At the same time, the Jewish Agency began a NIS 2 million upgrading for bomb shelters in the northern town of Karmiel.
The latest JAFI contributions to northern communities brought the total work done by the Agency to rehabilitate the North following the summer's war to some NIS 500m., making it the largest non-governmental contributor to rehabilitating the North.
In all, NIS 27m. has been spent on upgrading bomb shelters in both Jewish and non-Jewish towns, including the purchase and installation of 2,000 air conditioners, 1,600 television sets and 2,500 emergency lamps for the shelters.
JAFI programs also sent tens of thousands of children from the North to summer camps in the country's center during and after the war, and gave special aid to Arab and Druse communities and immigrants living in absorption centers in the North.
The jackets were purchased following an NIS 1.5 million contribution from the Canadian Jewish community. The Jewish community of Pittsburgh, Karmiel's sister city, donated the funds for the shelter upgrades.
