Vandals trash Austrian memorial to victims of Nazi regime

Vandals in southern Austria trashed a memorial erected in honor of victims of the Nazi regime, authorities said Thursday. Officials said an estimated $4,300 worth of damage was done to the glass memorial in the city center of Villach, which lists the names of local residents who perished in World War II. Police said no arrests were made. The memorial - which consists of 11 glass panels inscribed with the names of Jews, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, handicapped people, forced laborers and others slain by the Nazis, has been vandalized numerous times since it was unveiled in 1999, officials said. Vandals smashed several panels on three occasions this past July alone, police said.
