Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav has recommended not raising municipal tax rates in 2008, reports Yediot Haifa. The mayor's recommendation will come up for a vote at the ongoing council discussions on next year's budget.
According to the report, a freeze on tax rates would result in a genuine saving for residents when inflation is taken into account, and would continue the council's policies of encouraging young couples to move to the city while reducing the tax burden on all residents. Recently, the city announced that its 2006 budget had come in with a surplus of NIS 19 million, reportedly the best result for the past decade.
City treasurer Jacky Vakim said the city would continue giving residents all the discounts they were entitled to by law, including a two percent discount for those who pay their entire 2008 tax bill in advance by the end of this year, and a 1% discount for those who pay by the end of January.
