Hundreds of residents in Kiryat Shprintzak have signed a petition demanding that the city return a boulder and tree dedicated to the memory of hanged spy Elie Cohen, reports Yediot Haifa.
Several weeks ago, residents were mystified by the disappearance of the boulder and tree from the Elie Cohen memorial park, and then were angered to learn that the city had removed them and planned to place them elsewhere.
According to the report, residents say in their petition that the tree and the boulder belong back in the place where Cohen was born. No response was reported from the city.
Cohen was a top Israeli spy who infiltrated Syria's leadership and passed valuable information back to Israel before being caught and hanged publicly in Damascus in 1965.
