Police crack down on drunk, speeding drivers

More than 100 policemen and volunteers waited near entertainment venues and pulled over more than 400 drivers to test their breath for alcohol.

Tel Aviv policemen issued 619 fines and suspended 56 drivers' licenses in a campaign against drunken driving and excessive speeds last weekend, reports www.mynet.co.il. Police declared the campaign a success, saying that many of the drivers had been at risk of causing accidents that would have injured or killed them, or other people. According to the report, more than 100 policemen and volunteers waited near popular entertainment venues late at night for departing drivers, and pulled over more than 400 drivers to test their breath for alcohol. A police spokesman said that popular nightspots were known as a focal point for night-time accidents, and police had acted to catch people driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, or committing other offenses, such as unaccompanied new drivers. The report said that along with the fines issued and licenses suspended, 16 vehicles were impounded. The spokesman said police were hoping that even without any police campaign, drivers would learn that they should not take unnecessary chances and should abide by the law.
