Arab diplomatic efforts to end a standoff between pro- and anti-government forces in Lebanon resumed on Monday, a day after hundreds of thousands protesters swarmed downtown Beirut to pressure the US-backed prime minister to quit.
Sudanese presidential envoy Mustafa Osman Ismail arrived in the Lebanese capital from neighboring Syria to meet with Prime Minister Fuad Saniora and leaders of the Hizbullah-led opposition factions.
Earlier Monday, Ismail told journalists in Damascus that rival parties have expressed an "initial agreement" to Sudanese proposals to "contain the current crisis in Lebanon." He did not elaborate.
