US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced an agreement to end the fighting in Syria, after almost a whole day of hostilities between the Syrian government, Druze communities in the south of Syria, and the IDF.

"We have engaged all the parties involved in the clashes in Syria. We have agreed on specific steps that will bring this troubling and horrifying situation to an end tonight," Rubio said on X/Twitter.

"This will require all parties to deliver on the commitments they have made, and this is what we fully expect them to do," he added.

Rubio’s involvement in finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict came after declaring that the situation was “complicated” and that it “looks like a misunderstanding”.

Earlier this Wednesday, the US called on Syria to withdraw its troops in order to allow for a de-escalation, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.

"We are calling on the Syrian government to withdraw their military in order to allow all sides to be able to de-escalate," explained Bruce in an interview on Fox News.

Rubio, asked about Israeli strikes on Syria on Wednesday, said the US was concerned, adding that he had just spoken to the relevant parties over the phone.

At the same time, Rubio warned that the current conflict is a “direct threat to efforts to help build a peaceful and stable Syria.”
