Bus collision near Sharm e-Sheikh kills 12

A head-on collision Tuesday between two buses on a desert highway just outside the Red Sea resort of Sharm e-Sheikh killed at least 12 Egyptians and injured another 50, a health official said. The accident apparently occurred after one of the vehicles tried to overtake a car and slammed into the oncoming bus, said Said Issa, the chief of southern Sinai emergency unit. Deadly road accidents are common in Egypt and tend to be blamed on poorly maintained vehicles, bad roads and a lack of respect for traffic regulations. Police estimate that at least 6,000 are killed every year in car accidents.
