An Egyptian security official says 16 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, including high ranking members, were detained for engaging in political activity. The Brotherhood is the largest opposition bloc in parliament. Although officially banned, it holds 20 percent of the seats because candidates can run as independents. Among those detained Saturday are two former members of parliament, including Gamal Heshmat who says he was only defeated in the 2005 elections due to fraud. The police official said the group was holding a meeting in violation of the law which requires permits for political gatherings. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to address the media.
