A delegation of the radical Palestinian Hamas group began Wednesday talks with Egyptian intelligence officials on ways to end fighting with the rival moderate Fatah faction, officials said.
But immediately after arriving in Egypt, a top Hamas official accused Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement of balking on a reconciliation agreement signed in Mecca earlier this year under which the two sides formed a national unity government.
The Hamas official, Said Siyam, also blamed "outside forces" of arming Fatah units, including the influential Presidential Guard, and of training its members to fight Hamas. He did not elaborate.
"They want to strengthen the presidential guard and the militias at the expense of Hamas ... They want to obliterate Hamas," said Siyam, a former Hamas interior minister.
