Qatar was involved in mediation between Israel and Iran to achieve a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump on Monday night, a diplomatic source told The Jerusalem Post.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that a ceasefire has been reached between Jerusalem and Tehran and will enter into effect in the span of 24 hours.

Trump said that Iran will immediately cease attacks, and Israel will join the ceasefire at the 12th hour of the agreement. On the 24th hour, both sides will reportedly accept an end to the 12-day war.

Trump spoke to the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani before the agreement was reached, a source familiar with details told the Post. US Vice President JD Vance later spoke with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the source added.

Qatar's prime minister secures Tehran agreement to US proposal

Reuters reported shortly after that Qatar's prime minister secured Tehran's agreement to the US proposal for a ceasefire during a call with Iranian officials held after Iran's strikes on a US air base in Qatar on Monday, citing an official briefed on the negotiations.

The phone call came after Trump told Qatar's emir that Israel had agreed to the ceasefire and asked for Doha's help persuading Tehran to also agree to the ceasefire deal, the official said.

Ahead of his announcement, Trump expressed his gratitude to the Emir of Qatar in a later post and shared, "CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!"

The president's announcement came hours after Iran launched retaliatory strikes on US bases in the Middle East, namely in Qatar and Iraq, with Trump later calling the attacks "very weak."

Iranian official denies ceasefire, Israel yet to confirm

Later, CNN reported that Tehran never received a ceasefire proposal from the United States, citing an Iranian official.

The official claimed that Tehran would continue the war and that remarks from Israeli and US leaders would be viewed as a "deception" to justify continued attacks on Iran.

Israel has yet to confirm Trump's announcement at the time of writing.
