Iraqis: Iranians fire artillery at Kurds in Iraq

Iranian artillery opened fire Friday at Kurdish rebel positions inside Iraqi territory but caused no casualties or damage, Kurdish officials said. Kamal Karkouki, deputy speaker of parliament for the Kurdish regional administration, said the Iranians used rockets and cannon fire in the brief barrage near the village of Haj Omran, terming it a "violation of Iraqi sovereignty." Kurdish rebels fighting Iranian forces operate from Iraqi territory and have been active recently, mounting attacks against Iranian army and Revolutionary Guard posts. Iran says the rebels, known as Pejak, are linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which has waged a 15-year insurgency against Ankara for self rule in the Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast.
