A Panamanian-flagged passenger liner caught fire off Egypt's Red Sea coast late Tuesday and its 58 Egyptian crew members escaped into other vessels, a port official said.
It was unclear what caused the fire, which quickly spread out of control through the ship, called Al-Kahfain.
No passengers were aboard the ship, which was heading from the port city of Suez bound for Saudi Arabia but caught fire off the coast of Hurghada, 360 kilometers to the south, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was unauthorized to speak to the press.
Thirty crew members were rescued by other ships while 28 escaped into life rafts. One crew member was injured and treated aboard another ship.
