A pair of synchronized roadside bombings targeting an Iraqi patrol killed two civilians in Baghdad on Saturday, police said. In northern and central Iraq, meanwhile, US forces targeting al-Qaida detained 18 suspects and killed four, the military said.
The US military also announced the death of an American soldier, shot to death in an attack Friday in northern Ninevah province.
The roadside bombings in eastern Baghdad apparently targeted a passing police patrol Saturday morning. The second bomb detonated about two minutes after the first, hitting onlookers who had gathered at the site, police said. Two civilians were killed and nine injured, a police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details of the attack.
In central and northern Iraq, the US military said operations Friday targeting al-Qaida led to the capture of 18 suspects and left four militants dead.
In one of the raids, outside Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers north of Baghdad, the target was a group the military said was involved in gunfire attacks on American forces. Three suspects were killed in a US airstrike, the military said. After the airstrike, their vehicle blew up, indicating it had been storing explosives, the military said.
