Police fired tear gas Tuesday to disperse an anti-Israel demonstration and detained a number of the protesters, the Dogan News Agency reported.
Dozens of protesters waving the Lebanese flag in the low-income, left-wing Gazi neighborhood in Istanbul had cut off roads by erecting barriers and had forced surrounding businesses to close, the agency reported.
Police in armored vehicles destroyed the barriers and dispersed the crowd with tear gas and high-pressure water hoses, Dogan reported. They pursued protesters trying to escape into side streets and detained them.
