US soldier killed during battle in south Baghdad

A US soldier was killed during a gun battle in Baghdad, the military said Thursday. The Multi-National Division-Baghdad soldier died during a small-arms fire engagement Wednesday in a southern section of the capital, Elements from the soldier's unit have found 10 weapons caches during recent combat operations in the area, including more than 300 pounds (136 kilograms) of homemade explosives, 30 mortar rounds and components of powerful roadside bombs known as explosively formed projectiles, or EFPs, according to the death announcement. The soldier's identity was not released pending notification of relatives.
