The man who carried out a “thrill killing” two decades ago that shocked Israel is soon to walk out of prison a free man, after a Beersheba judge on Tuesday ordered him released nearly four years early.Moshe Ben-Ivgi was only 14 when he and his friend Arbel Aloni, of the same age, gunned down cab driver Derek Roth in Herzliya on January 9, 1994. Both teens were sentenced to 16 years in prison and were rearrested in 1998, after they committed a violent armed robbery of a Herzliya kiosk during a furlough. In May 2004, despite prison and police objections, Ben-Ivgi was given another furlough, during which he fled to Argentina using a fake passport.On Tuesday, Beersheba District Court Judge Yoel Eden ruled that the remaining 1,553 days on Ben-Ivgi’s sentence would be subtracted from the time he spent in an Argentine prison on robbery charges.The decision is not to be applied for 15 days in order to give the state the opportunity to issue an appeal.Ben-Ivgi was extradited to Israel in November, escorted by two Argentinean police officers.Argentina had originally refused to extradite him unless Israel agreed that upon his return he would be sentenced only for the armed robbery and not the murder, which happened while he was a minor. Israel had to accept the agreement.Ben-Ivgi’s accomplice Aloni was released after serving his entire sentence, but last month was convicted of credit card fraud.
