Ben-Eliezer: Labor rebels should split

Five MKs say they will resist attempts to impose faction discipline on them.
Tensions between loyalists of Labor chairman Ehud Barak and MKs who opposed joining the coalition hit a new peak in Monday's Labor faction meeting at the Knesset. Five MKs said they would resist attempts to impose faction discipline on them, and they ended up absenting themselves from the day's budget-related votes. "If they don't accept the Labor convention's decision [to join the coalition], maybe the time has come for them to leave the party," Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said at the faction meeting. Because Labor faction chairman Daniel Ben-Simon is the only Labor MK who is not a minister or deputy minister who supports the coalition, Labor had to allow Habayit Hayehudi MK Zevulun Orlev to join the Knesset House Committee that allocates committee memberships instead of a lawmaker from Labor.
