Merkel slams Ahmadinejad's Holocaust dismissal
02/20/2006
German Chancellor Angela Merkel renewed her criticism Monday of the Iranian president's dismissal of the Holocaust, describing his remarks as "unspeakable." Merkel was detailing what she described as "completely new and foreign and security policy conditions" as her conservative Christian Democrats launched a review of a 12-year-old basic statement of policy. "Today's Iranian president denies the Holocaust in an unspeakable way, he wants to erase Israel from the map," she said. "In view of the new problems," she added, her party should review the fact that the previous policy platform did not explicitly mention Israel's right to exist. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad provoked outrage in Europe when he said Israel should be "wiped out" and the Holocaust was a "myth." The comments came amid mounting tensions over Iran's nuclear program.
