The Ministerial Committee on National Security on Wednesday discussed the political and diplomatic aspects of recent Palestinian developments, both in Gaza and the West Bank. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made it clear that Israel's objective was to enter negotiations quickly, while finding a way to overcome the obstacles obstructing this goal, said the Prime Minister's Office. Netanyahu said that the possibility that Palestinian elections might be held soon was causing a polarization of Palestinian Authority positions regarding Israel and was hindering the resumption of peace negotiations. Senior officials from IDF Intelligence, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), the Mossad, the Foreign Ministry and the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories presented detailed briefings to the ministers, while IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi updated the committee on Tuesday night's capture of the ship that was smuggling Iranian weapons to Syria.
