Nazareth church attackers indicted Staff
Habibis charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, arson, public disorder.
An indictment was served to the Nazereth District Court on Thursday against the Habibi family who allegedly hurled objects and explosives in the Church of the Annunciation at the beginning of March. Hayim Eliyahu, his Christian wife Violet and daughter Odelya, were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, arson, attempt to damage property using explosives, public disorder and threatening behavior. Their remand was extended by five days and the prosecution submitted a request for the suspects to remain in custody until the end of legal proceedings. On March 3, the Habibis entered the church disguised as pilgrims equipped with a baby carriage filled with 19 gas canisters, bottles of turpentine, petrol, 64 flares and 25 fireworks, all of which they attempted to detonate. In confrontations between residents and police after the incident, 13 policemen and 13 civilians were wounded. Four vehicles were burnt including two police cars. Police knew Hayim Eliyahu Habibi, who is suffering from a mental disposition, as he attempted to carry out similar attacks in the past including one on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The family was being treated by Jerusalem's social services after the children were taken away from their parents.
