Avraham Grant ended the uncertainty regarding his future at Portmouth on Thursday, announcing his resignation as manager of the Premier League club in a open letter to the team’s fans.
Grant, the 56-year-old Israeli manager who led Pompey to the FA Cup final, was a big hit with club’s supporters in his seven-month tenure despite the side’s relegation to the Championship and a season full of financial turmoil.
“This was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to take in my football career,” Grant said. “After a lot of soul searching and under the circumstances I’m taking a different direction.”
The former Chelsea manager, who had two years left on his contract at
Portsmouth, will likely not be out of a job long, with West Ham United
being reported to be extremely interested in securing his services as
its next coach after the dismissal of Gianfranco Zola last week.
“It has been both a difficult and complex year, but at the same time
it’s been a wonderful uplifting professional and personal experience,”
wrote a clearly emotional Grant in his departing address, which was
posted on the Portsmouth FC official web site late Thursday night.
