The Border Police saluted its 451 officers who fell in the line of duty during a ceremony at the Baraki Junction on Wednesday evening.
"This force as always been on the front lines and its officers serve wherever there is danger, to secure our lives and safety," Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said during the ceremony. Police Insp.-Gen David Cohen said the Border Police was deployed in the most troubled friction spots and that it is tasked with maintaining public order and fighting crime. "Without them, many of Israel's residents could not maintain their daily routines," Cohen said.
Border Police head Cmdr. Yisrael Yitzhak said, "We must remember all of our sons who are no longer with us. We all share in the pain and ultimate sacrifice they made for the country, and we send out a warm hug to the families of the fallen."
The Border Police was officially founded in 1953, and has prided itself on acting as a melting pot for Israeli society, recuiting officers from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and religous affiiations.
