Supreme Court acquits Ilana Dayan of 'Captain R' libel

The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday to acquit Channel 2 investigative reporter Ilana Dayan of libel over a 2005 documentary on the killing of 13 year old Iman Darweesh Al Hams by IDF troops in the Gaza Strip, overturning a 2009 Jerusalem District Court ruling.

In an episode of the Uvda ('Fact') news show, Dayan said her investigation found that IDF commanding officer Captain R. had shot al-Hams at point blank range. Captain R. sued Dayan and the Telad production company for libel after he was acquitted of wrongdoing in an IDF court martial. The District Court awarded him NIS 300,000 in damages.
