Ministry, Eilat agree to integrate migrant kids in schools

The Ministry of Education, Municipality of Eilat and a group of migrants in Eilat announced an agreement late Sunday for integrating the migrants into the regular school system, on the eve before the first day of school on Monday.

The agreement dispenses with the ministry's and Eilat's original proposal of "separate but equal" schools, or putting all the migrant children in a completely separate school system, and ends months of court fights starting with the Administrative Court in Beersheba earlier in the summer and reaching the High Court of Justice last Thursday.

It had appeared that the High Court would uphold the lower court's order to integrate the migrants, a likely motivation for dropping the separate but equal school plan.
