China welcomes UNSC cease-fire resolution
08/12/2006
China on Saturday praised a United Nations resolution calling for an immediate end to the war between Israel and Hizbullah as a good foundation for future peace in the Middle East. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council late Friday night and is seen as the best chance yet for peace after more than four weeks of fighting. China, one of the council's permanent five veto-wielding members, "welcomes and supports the resolution," the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Chinese Foreign Ministry. "China hopes concerned sides will implement the Security Council resolution in a tangible manner, resume peace and stability in the Middle East region at an early date," the ministry said.
