Pope's appearance watched for apology
09/17/2006
Pope Benedict XVI's appearance Sunday before the faithful at his summer palace outside Rome was being closely watched to see if he will apologize for remarks about Islam and holy war, as many angry Muslims around the world have been demanding. The pontiff gives his blessing and makes briefs remarks every Sunday at noon (1000 GMT) to pilgrims. Since his return on Thursday from the German pilgrimage where he made the remarks, he has been staying at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, in the Alban Hills outside Rome. Sunday's encounter with the faithful at Castel Gandolfo was his first scheduled appearance with the general public since he flew back from his native Germany.
