Steinitz issues ultimatum to haredim on rabbinical judges appointments
By JEREMY SHARON
07/06/2016
Energy Minister and chairman of the Rabbinical Judges Appointments Committee Yuval Steinitz issued an ultimatum to the haredi parties and the chief rabbis on Wednesday, saying he would hold a vote in the appointments committee with or without them next week.

Steinitz made his comments after Chief Rabbis Yitzhak Yosef and David Lau, as well as United Torah Judaism MK Yisrael Eichler, told Steinitz minutes before the committee was supposed to convene that they would not be attending.

Yosef, backed by Shas and UTJ politicians are stalling for time until the end of the summer, when the composition of the committee may change slightly in their favor. The High Court of Justice has ruled that if appointments are not made by July 15 it will annul current temporary judges on the court, bringing its operations to a near standstill.
