A knife-wielding Palestinian was shot and killed Tuesday evening following an attempted stabbing attack on IDF soldiers at a checkpoint outside the West Bank city of Tulkarm.

According to an IDF statement, “an assailant armed with a knife attempted to stab an IDF soldier at a crossing adjacent to Tulkarm. Responding to the imminent threat, forces fired towards the attacker, resulting in his death.”

Palestinian media identified the assailant as 44-year-old Tulkarm resident Nidal Daoud Mahdawi, who held Israeli residency status.

Earlier in the day, police cleared for publication that Border Police officers prevented a stabbing attack in Jerusalem on Monday. According to the police, a 19-year-old Palestinian was detained as he was riding a bus in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of a-Tur. The man admitted to police that he had intended to go to Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem, where he planned to buy a knife and stab police or security forces in the area.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Palestinian was remanded and will be held in detention until he appears in court.

Also on Monday, a 17-year-old Palestinian was killed during clashes with Border Police in the West Bank village of Tukua near Bethlehem. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, Qusay Hasna al-Umour was shot in the chest three times.
