Anya Gostomelsky continued her domination of the Israeli women's swimming scene with an easy win at the Israeli National Championships at the Wingate Institute on Tuesday evening.
The Kiryat Gat swimmer, who has yet to secure a spot in next year's Olympics, easily clinched the 50 meters butterfly event, stopping the clock on 27.21 seconds.
The second day of the Israeli national swimming tournament was held in front of a sold out crowd. Omer Barnea, Israel's latest and most exciting talent, was part of the Hapoel Jerusalem relay team which won the men's 4X100 meters freestyle competition.
Barnea officially became Israel's second swimming representative at the Beijing Olympics last week, breaking the Israeli record in the 100m backstroke at the European Union Trophy in Paris. Barnea finished the race in 55.21 seconds, shattering Eitan Orbach's Israeli record.
"It's always great to participate in the top-level events like this," a proud Barnea told reporters. "I exceeded everyone's expectations, including my own. Being with my fellow teammates was very helpful." Barnea was in top form as his team won the 4X100 relay event. The rising star teamed up with fellow Jerusalem swimmers Ofer Finkler, Vitaly Pushkar and Gal Nevo. The team stopped the clock at 3:30:17 minutes, 22 hundredths of a second faster that the previous Israeli record.
The Israeli Championships started on Monday, with relatively unknown swimmers stealing the glory.
Olga Bransieva won the 1500 meters freestyle event, and American-Israeli participant Max Yeban finished the 800 meters with a time of 18:01:46. minutes.
The championships will continue on Wednesday and will be held daily until Friday.
