Arsenal batters Portsmouth 4-0

Frozen pitches play havoc with schedule.

Arsenal handed Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth side a Christmas beating at Highbury on Wednesday night. The Gunners won 4-0 with goals from Dennis Bergkamp, Jose Antonio Reyes and Thierry Henry. Also in the Premiership Chelsea continued its march towards a second consecutive title with a 1-0 win at Manchester City while Birmingham held Manchester United to a 2-2 draw at St Andrews. Wigan carried on its surprisingly rich vein of form with a 2-0 win over West Ham at Upton Park. The Latics are currently riding high in fifth place in the league. In a pulsating derby match Liverpool scored its ninth league win in a row with a 3-1 victory over Everton. Elsewhere, Fulham drew 3-3 with Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion beat Tottenham 2-0. Three of Wednesday's 10 Premier League games - Bolton vs Middlesborough, Blackburn vs Sunderland and Newcastle vs Charlton - were called off after a midwinter freeze left playing conditions dangerous. While most of Europe has a midseason break, the English leagues schedule four rounds of games in eight days to take advantage of fans enjoying time off for Christmas and New Year celebrations. But cold weather blowing across from mainland Europe left many grounds frozen and, despite undersoil heating, 17 matches scheduled for Wednesday were called off. AP contributed to this report.
