Games We Play - Golf: US airman wins Gaash monthly medal

Steve Midkiff tops "A" Division with net-65, followed in second place by Isaac Rachamim.

With a regular field of over 80 golfers, the December Monthly Medal at the Gaash Golf Club was held over two days. The "A" division was won by Steve Midkiff, a US Air Force officer serving in Israel, who played the first nine in a four over par 39 and coming back in one over 36, with two birdies, four pars and three bogies. With his 10 handicap he won the "A" Division with a net-65, followed in second place by Isaac Rachamim with a net-77. The "C" Division was played on December 25 and the "A" and "B" Divisions played the following day. With the 2006 "Champion of Champions" competition coming up in the beginning of January, players are still keen to make the cut for this prestigious tournament. Monday produced perfect playing conditions, whereas Tuesday started off with close to 40 golfers teeing off but then rain & wind caused many of the players to discontinue the round. Unfortunately the bad weather conditions prevented any player in the "B" division finishing the competition. The "C" Division was won by Rima Rachamim on net 67, followed by Jill Pik on net 70. The Wine Center at Gaash sponsored prizes for the "nearest to the pin" and the "longest drive" competition on both days. The Ladies had the longest drive competition on the second hole, 304 meters, par four. On the first day, this was won by Mimi Bannister with a 142 meter drive. On the second day Rachel Zelikowitz had the longest drive, hitting the ball 166 meters. The Men's competition was nearest to the pin on the ninth hole, 160 meters, par three. The First Day honors went to Rafi Shelef whose shot was just seven meters from the hole.
