The Israel Recreational Hockey League opened the 2010/11 ice hockey season Thursday with last year’s champion Northern Whites coming from behind to defeat Jerusalem 8-5.
The Whites were led by rookie sensation Gavi Sasson, a new oleh who scored a hattrick in his Israeli hockey debut.
Josh Greenberg also notched three goals for the northerners and new leftwinger Geoffrey Laner had a goal and four assists. Jason Swirsky was solid between the pipes in victory.
Jerusalem’s older defense had trouble holding back the younger Whites, getting into penalty problems and allowing two power play goals.
Jerusalem’s Sabra power forward line of Gal Assa, Erez Cohanke and Ziv Sharon could only muster two goals, with Sean Insler also scoring a pair. Goalie Chaim Goldzweig had problems with the light fog hovering over the ice at the Canada Centre’s Olympic-sized rink.
IRHA president Danny Spodek said the 5-team league is also planning their 5th annual international tournament for February with teams expected from the USA, Canada and Europe.
