Local Hoops: Tapiro looks for Final Four spot with Rishon

Local Hoops Tapiro look

After receiving offers from practically half of the teams in the BSL, Meir Tapiro decided to sign with Maccabi Rishon Lezion on Tuesday. The 34-year-old guard will team up with veteran coach Effi Birenboim and the two have high hopes for the coming season. "I've been training with Rishon for the past two weeks and I've enjoyed every moment," said Tapiro, who practiced under his friend Birenboim to remain in shape until he signs a contract. "Effi has spoken about reaching the Final Four, but my goal is to enjoy myself. Throughout my career I have believed that with enjoyment come victories and success. I think there is a lot of potential at Rishon and I hope that we will be a significant factor in the BSL this season." In the past two seasons Tapiro starred for Bnei Hasharon, but failed to guide the team to a title. In fact, in his entire career in Israel, Tapiro has only won one title, claiming the State Cup with Hapoel Jerusalem in the 2006/07 season. "Tapiro is a player who makes everyone around him better," said Birenboim. "I think Meir is the most competitive player I have ever met. "He will do everything to win. With a player like Meir on our team there is no doubt we are aiming to reach the Final Four."
