It's amazing to think that up until Tuesday Miki Dorsman was still out of a coaching job. Five-and-a-half months after guiding Hapoel Holon to an extraordinary championship win, the 42-year-old businessman still couldn't find a club willing to hand him the coaching reins. As he also owned Holon, Dorsman was never treated like any other Israeli coach and never really received the recognition he deserved for his coaching skills. He was always regarded as a millionaire having fun with a toy he bought, rather than a legitimate basketball coach, who also happened to own the team he guides. The former husband of billionaire heiress Shari Arison always said that he was first and foremost a coach and he must have expected that after he left Holon, both as owner and coach, at least several BSL teams would be interested in his services. However Dorsman, who was never in basketball for the money, didn't receive any reasonable offers and had no choice but to return to concentrate on his businesses. You would have thought that snatching the championship away from Maccabi Tel Aviv's grasp was enough to prove your worth, but Dorsman was left out of the coaching merry-go-round until Rishon finally came calling on Tuesday. Rishon gave Dorsman the shot he deserved and did itself and Israel basketball as a whole a massive favor. Dorsman is not only a proven and talented coach, but is also one of the more decent and open figures in Israeli basketball and his return to the scene is superb news for every basketball lover in this country. allon@jpost.com
