Shahar Pe'er will miss the French Open after an x-ray revealed on Tuesday that she's suffering from a stress fracture in her right foot and will not be able to play for at least the next four weeks. The 22-year-old retired at the start of her semifinal match in the Estoril Open last Friday and then couldn't complete her first round encounter in the Madrid Open on Monday because of an ankle inflammation. The French Open begins on May 24. "Unfortunately, after my excellent preparation for the clay court season I'm forced to return to Israel because of a foot injury," said Pe'er, who will come back home with her coach Pablo Giacopelli on Wednesday and get a second opinion on the problematic foot. "Luckily, the injury was caught quite early and will not require a long recovery process. However, it will definitely mean I will miss the Roland Garros." Giacopelli said: "It is an unfortunate set back after the preparation we did for the clay season and the standard of play Shahar has been displaying. "Still we will gather together and help Shahar get better as soon as possible to make sure she is out on the court doing what she does best which is playing tennis and representing her beloved country Israel."
