Zehava Galon and Yair Golan, the two Meretz leadership candidates, represent two sharply different visions for the future of the party.
Following statements from Zehava Galon last week regarding Zionism and Meretz, her fellow leadership candidate Yair Golan took to Facebook to criticize her.
The former Meretz head stressed that this was "not an easy decision."
The health minister's decision to not run for the Meretz chairmanship currently leaves Yair Golan as the sole candidate.
"I will run in order to build a proud, strong, Zionist Left, that fights for Israel's character and future," Golan said.
The student's comments were made during a discussion between grade 12 students and Golan on Zionism and religion.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett slammed Golan - a member of his coalition - and said that the residents of Judea and Samaria were the modern day pioneers of Israel.
The letter was signed by five Labor MKs, six Blue and White MKs and Yair Golan of Meretz. No Arabs signed it, but Druze MKs did.
