Up to 10,000 cormorants (a bird species similar to the pelican) will be stopping in Israel en route to their winter habitat in Africa. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority, in conjunction with the Electric Company, is offering a glimpse of the cormorants as they gather in a colony near the Electric Company's Orot Rabin plant in Hadera.
The Parks Authority is conducting tours to explain about the cormorants and their migration, but to see the cormorants at their notorious noisiest, one must visit during their feeding hours in the early morning or during evening hours, when hundreds of birds settle down to roost amidst a tremendous cacophony.
Free tours will be held every Saturday from December 1 till February 2, starting every half hour from 10 a.m. 'til 3 p.m. The tours will take place at the Heftziba Park. To get there, take Route 2 (the coastal highway) to Caesarea junction, towards Hadera. Make a right at the first traffic light, and then the next right, then follow the signs.
A more common bird will be one of the highlights at the Parks Authority's Hannuka celebration. At the Beit Guvrin National Park, the focus will be on pigeons, and the ancient columbaria from Roman times which housed them. From this Thursday through next Saturday there will be a display of more than 1,000 pigeons, including carrier pigeons and racing pigeons.
